How we take it for granted that what is done can never be undone, that there is no going back on the past; that the consequences of our follies pursue us relentlessly through life./ There is no escaping the common experience in regard to these things; on the face of it the belief that our evil deeds come home to roost is well founded. A person cannot play tricks with his constitution and be as though he had not. A person cannot waste their days in idleness and attain to mastery in any serious vocation . They cannot play false to their ideals and convictions without developing into a despicable character. They cannot act meanly and cruelly to others without suffering for it sooner or later. Break a heart that trusts and loves you and your own will be wrung by and by. But we are not justified in saying of any man or any situation that the case is hopeless, for it is not true. Nature teaches us a useful lesson in this way; she always works towards compensation. No sooner is a limb broken then she starts to mend it; give her time and she will reclothe every blight-smitten landscape with bloom. Many of her expedients in the renewing of life are as ingenious as they are beautiful. The same holds good of character and destiny; nothing is final. Let no mood of despair ever persuade one to the contrary. The worst mistake can be redeemed; the wickedest action can be retrieved. Slow and toilsome may be ones recovery of what was lost by ones own fault, BUT THERE ARE NO BARRED GATES ON THE UPWARD ROAD.
