One of my favourite goddess archetype is the Egyptian deity Isis, partly because her story rivals that of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and her formidable fellow country woman, the Queen of the Nile herself, Cleopatra. As a manifestation of Divine Feminine, the wisdom found in her myth expands different levels of understanding and today I want to focus in four empowering lessons I have learned from Isis, useful in businesses, relationships, projects and goals.
Lesson 1: stay true to your vision and be ready to give it your all. In Isis’ story, her husband Osiris is tricked by Seth to get into a coffin that is then sealed and thrown into a river. The coffin gets stuck in the roots of a big tree and eventually covered by them. Isis travels the whole world looking for her husband, to, apparently, not avail. She seeks for years, following dead-ends, until she finally finds Osiris.
Lesson 2: we all make mistakes or/and bad things sometimes happen and we should be prepared to start all over again. After Isis finds the coffins, she needs to obtain means to revive Osiris and leaves the coffin alone. Seth learns about this, and orders Osiris’ body to be dismembered, his pieces to be scattered all over the world. So Isis is back at square one -and worst, as she’s now looking not for one objec
t, but many. Yet, without hesitation, she sets out again, and patiently recovers the body parts of her beloved.
Lesson 3: we must be ready to be resourceful, adaptable and think out-side the box to achieve our goals. Isis finally finds and puts Osiris’ parts together again, in her own version of Humpty Dumpty. Well, not quite. Osiris’ virile member has disappeared, some say swallowed by a fish. Isis realizes that to beat Seth she needs powerful help, and her husband is in no condition to provide it. So she fashions a gold penis and uses magic to impregnate herself with Osiris’ spirit, eventually given birth to their son, Horus. It will take some time and additional misfortunes, but Horus will defeat Seth and bring his father back to life .
Lesson 4: our final goal may not quite be exactly as we originally envisioned it, and, usually, this is for the best. Isis wanted to live with her husband as rulers of Egypt. Yet at the end, Osiris became the ruler of the eternal, spiritual world on the other side of death and Horus the ruler of the material world on this side of death. Isis then divides her time between both worlds, becoming then a primordial mother figure to humans and supporting both her husband and son. So in this new turn of events, she comes out stronger, wiser, mistress of life and death, and the seat of power of both deities.
